On the development of geometric cognition: Beyond nature vs. nurture

How is knowledge of geometry developed and acquired? This central question in the philosophy mathematics has received very different answers. Spelke colleagues argue for a “core cognitivist”, nativist, view according to which geometric cognition an important way shaped by genetically determined abilities shape recognition orientation. Against nativist position, Ferreirós García-Pérez have argued “culturalist” account that takes be fundamentally culturally phenomenon. In this paper, I when understood as moderate versions supported state-of-the-art research, culturalist views are fact possible reconcile. While present work implying determined, they fail appreciate role see cultural factors. On basis, provide theoretical terminological clarifications show consistent with each other. then propose unifying framework future study can integrate two accounts ontogeny moving beyond crude nature (nativism) vs. nurture (culturalism) dichotomy.
